Transport

The Transport Interest Group has studied the airport from several angles. First, accessibility of the airport by public transport had their interest and the Group published recommendations for regional authorities and airport operators. (‘Promoting Public Transport at Airports’, ARC, January 1999) Then the group studied the combination of functions at an airport (airport city) which resulted in a fascinating study 'From airport to airport city', published in January 2001. This work was taken forward with a study of airport systems as a method for managing air travel demand in metropolitan areas, for a region or even a whole country. ‘Airport Dynamics Towards Airport Systems’ reported upon the conclusions and was published in May 2003. Capacity questions, airport networks and the development of new routes became more topical with the introduction of the low cost business model in the aviation sector. A study of these matters was presented to 10th anniversary ARC conference in Brussels during November 2004 and the results published as ‘Low cost, a Regional Affair’.

In the near future the transport group will work on several aspects of surface accessibility. For example passenger choice of access modes, the accessibility requirements of airport cities, surface access characteristics of no frills airlines passengers and airport mobility design.
